What is Journeys?
Journey’s was created four years ago in Vancouver as an off shoot to a popular weekly dance event called Just Dance. Just Dance, now in its 14th year! is a weekly "positive party" community event that offers a unique opportunity to dance to an eclectic selection of music from around the world. It was created as a refreshing alternative to the bar and club scene where people from all walks could come to a clean, smoke and alcohol free environment to dance, commune and have a great time.
Journeys took the basic concept of Just Dance and added themes to each event creating a unique dance experience every time. . Often Journeys events would be loosely facilitated by a special guest sharing their own unique dance modalities or talents. As per the name the Journeys concept was created to take the
participants on a complete intentional dance journey from the start to the end of the night. During Journeys, everything from the evening theme, the music and the environment provides an open space to take your dancing to a deeper place. Call it an opportunity to tribal dance, sweat your prayers, or journey with your inner shamanic self.
Who offers Journeys?
Calgary’s journeys will be hosted By Jay Michael and Kylee Sorensen. Jay Michael was previously involved with the Vancouver Journeys crew over the last several years and brings 8 years of musical dj’ing expertise to our dance floors. Kylee Sorensen has been facilitating Inner Journeys and Kundalini Dance workshops in Southern Alberta. With her background of twelve years as a
national level gymnast, she has dedicated her world to movement and its expression.
As Journey’s grows we hope so will our family. Setting up and clearing out after the night can be a lot of work. If you find that journey’s resonates with you perhaps you would consider volunteering some time to help us out.
What can I expect out of a night at Journeys.
7 pm until 8 pm – Some people appreciate meditating before the dance to help get centered, let go of the week, and get the mind-body connection going. Therefore, before each dance we offer an optional and free guided meditation.. No experience is necessary. The process is explained and can be very rewarding even for first-timers.
8pm until 830pm – After the meditation there will be a thirty minute section of time where people can incorporate their meditation, meet and greet the other participants and prepare for the opening circle.
830 – 845 – Opening circle. An opportunity for the Journeys family to introduce the evenings theme and the facilitator. Also a time to discuss the guidelines and usage of the space.
845 – 1145pm – This is where the fun happens! Three full hours of infectious Global world beat dance music. Journeys does not stick with one style of music! We take much pride in bringing various sounds from around the world and invite you to groove to a long list of World Rhythms influenced by African, Latin, Drumming, Celtic, Middle-Eastern along with the modern sounds of Pop, Trance, House,Progressive, Nu-Jazz, Downtempo and much more.
1145-1200 Closing circle. An intentional closing of the evening to acknowledge everyone involved and make announcements for future events. Also gives an opportunity for anybody to share a bit about their experience of the evening.
1200-100 am Clean up
Who comes to journeys?
Simply put, anyone who loves to move, dance, play and be in an open-minded and relaxed environment. Journeys welcomes people of all backgrounds, ethnicities, and sexual orientations. This event is not associated with any organization, religion or sect. Come as you are.
What should I wear?
Whatever suits your fancy - and your comfort! Layers are recommended due to a good range of temperatures; cooler in the beginning of the evening and definitively hot as our collective dancing feet start picking up speed. While people wear clothing styles that range from the dressy to the casual, most everyone opts for comfortable and movement-friendly clothes. Many prefer the delight of dancing barefoot, and for others we invite them to wear soft-soled shoes.
Are refreshments available?
You can choose between the bottle water we sell, the water fountain or you may prefer to bring your own water and/or snacks.
