this is somewhat in response to my posts in the laptop DJing section. This article is a sweet philosophical essay on the bonds between technology and art and what it means during the transition... like painting when photography came along, or what digital film means to the gooey chemical stuff, and now I think, is happening with laptop vs. analog DJ's...

I posted this on subtutious and got like zero comments...I'd love to hear what people here think.

Very interesting article. The comparison between photography and techno is a good one. It's unfortunate that the masses don't get the music, but on the other hand that's probably a good thing. I've always considered minimal psytrance (or techno for that matter) to be like the traditional Japanese zen garden. There is some feature that stands out against the sea of repetition, in the case of the garden a large stone or something set in a mass of smaller pebbles.

I find it quite amusing that people go out to see a rock band because they want to hear "real" music instead of "recorded" music, but unless it's jazz, what they are seeing is memorized note-playing by the musician. It's really just a different kind of recording device.
