2010... Bring It On

Posted on Jan 31, 2010

As is often the case life for me is in constant fluctuation, in all areas and at all times. I have found that adjusting to being home after our big 9 month trip last year has taken much longer than I ever would have thought, and it is only now, 10 months after getting back, that I am finally starting to get grounded.

I can't really put my finger on the reasons why, but I know that for me a part of it has to do with the fact that ignorance is bliss and our trip certainly filled my mind with much to think about... it's in the thinking that I at times find myself stuck in a rut. I let my mind think about things that I have no control over while my immediate surroundings go neglected. It really is a struggle for me sometimes to be able to focus on my own immediate environment by addressing all the small, positive, and easily achievable things that can be done throughout the day.

One of the things I have put on hold for many months now has been my music, and I am happy to say that I am finally feeling motivated and excited again. I have even finally taken on the big step to begin to produce which I have been waffling about for many years now. For some reason the time was never quite right but as of 2010 I am officially committed to giving it an honest effort. It helps to have so many talented people around to give me tips and I would be a fool to pass up their assistance.

Also in the works is a side project with Matte Gillard aka Anahata. We are putting our heads and skills together, and we figure that with our 20+ years combined experience (me as a dj and he as a producer/performer) that we should be able to put on a killer show at least once this summer. Our idea is to combine playing tracks while incorporating original layers, loops and samples along with manipulating the entire thing more in the manner of a live performance. The two of us on one laptop with numerous midi controllers. So far we are just sorting out tracks that we both like, and hammering out the details of how we will be utilizing the software. It will be a fun process and a great way to learn more about a different way of performing.

As for mixes, I have just finished one off for Wes Straub's radio show: 709Sessions and once it has aired I will post it up on Area709. It's driving progressive house mix that leans towards the techno end of things in places. I am pretty happy with how it turned out and it sounds fantastic in the car. You can tune in at these locations:

Other mixes on the go are the Sons Of Aurora Motion Notion 2009 mix from last summer, as well as the Bardo mix from Halloween 2009, and I also have a huge folder of progressive psy that is begging to be put into one super-long continuous mix for those multi-hour round trips ahead.

Summer festival season is also booking up, and it's nice to be reminded of warm summer nights in the middle of winter. =)  Lots to keep me busy indeed.

Zenon Steps It Up

Posted on Nov 29, 2009

The new sight is up and it looks sweet. Nice work Tim!!

 http://www.zenonrecords.com/

I also had a chance to play out a few tracks off of the upcoming new Sensient and Autonomech albums, fucking AWESOME. VERY good crowd respone, those tunes were killer and a treat to mix.

And... after listening to the upcoming Vacuum Stalkers album, it's got a bunch of top-notch tracks as well. If you like the Zenon sound, you are in for a treat in the next couple of months!!

The Reason Why I Do This

Posted on Nov 23, 2009

I have been in a bit of a funk since I got back from my big trip with Irena... 9 months exploring the world is really hard to instantly end, harder on my head than I thought it would be.

While we were on our travels, I came to realise just how amazing my friends and community are here in Canada and my home town of Calgary. Irena and I met a lot of interesting people on our travels, but we were both surprised how rare it was to find those we could really connect with and just have easy comfortable laughter and conversation with, yet here at home we have many many people with whom we can do just that.

Music and dance were quite absent from our time away, we rarely went to a club or even listened to our ipods which is crazy considering how it's such a huge part of my life here in Calgary. The few times we were out in a group to dance, it was fun but it simply did not come close to comparing with the energy and positivity that we have here at home.

I have to admit that I really was not sure if I would continue to dj or throw events once we got back from our trip, I wanted to be open to a new future with new adventures and challenges, but now that I am back I realise that creating the space and place for Irena and I and everyone in our community to come together and close out the world for the duration of an evening... it's a really important thing for us all on so many different levels.

When we come together to visit, dance, have intense conversations, laugh, share or ideas and dreams, co-create and then walk away able to share our new-found positivity with the rest of the people in our lives, that is significant and without it life gets much more grey.

I don't know you but I am not too keen on increasing the grey in my life.

This Friday night a crew of us are coming together to share our energies and the more people we can get out to join us, the better it will be by far. I want to look out and see the place packed with smiles and dance and people ripping it up!!

I know we all know someone who would also really enjoy a night out like this one... these events are rare so pass this invite along to those you want beside you on the dance floor. Bringing in new energy to our events is vital!!

Thank you for taking the time to read my little message, thank you for passing it along and spreading the word, and I hope that you come out to join us for some ass shaking and killer tunes at Ecliptic III on Friday Nov 27th. I know that many of you have already reserved your ticket, thank you!!
